“Orchid Pyramid: All About Roots"
Joshua Jones is an award-winning orchid grower, educator, and owner of The Orchid Den in Jacksonville, Florida. With more than 15 years of orchid-growing experience, he cultivates a wide range of species and hybrids, creates handcrafted orchid pottery, and shares his knowledge through presentations and his YouTube channel, The Orchid Den. Joshua is also actively involved in orchid hybridizing and has earned multiple awards for his exceptional plants.
On July 13 he'll present, "Orchid Pyramid: All About Roots" at the Learning Center at Flamingo Gardens. Guests are always welcome!

John Finer is known as the Plant Propagator. He is a researcher, hybridizer, and educator with forty-eight registered orchid hybrids to his name. He will present “Growing Orchids from Seed,” sharing his experience with orchid propagation, culture, and breeding on Monday June 8.

"Why Did My Orchid Die?"
Scott Peplin is Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society's featured speaker for the May 11 meeting. A longtime South Florida orchid grower, Scott has over 30 years of experience cultivating orchids in our region’s unique climate. He is the founder of Orchid Environments, where he consults on and maintains orchid collections throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties. Scott also teaches monthly classes in his orchid house, affectionately known as The Orchid Bar & Grill, and frequently lectures for local orchid societies. His presentation, “Why Did My Orchid Die?”, offers a humorous and informative look at the challenges of growing orchids.

Annette Scardina is a proud board member of the Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society and a second-year participant in the American Orchid Society’s Student Judging Program. She has been a dedicated orchid grower for five years, beginning her passion—as many do—with a Phalaenopsis from a big box store. Her collection and expertise has grown extensively beyond that first orchid. Annette will be sharing her experience growing and researching orchids in the genus Brassia.

““Unique Beauty and Surprises of Catasetum"
Mark Margolis is a retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools middle and junior high school science teacher with a 30-year teaching career and a non-commercial orchid grower for more than 35 years. While he grows many types of orchids, his specialty—and favorite—is the Catasetum group, with more than 1000 plants in his collection. Since September 2024, Mark has earned more than 150 awards from the American Orchid Society. A dedicated hobbyist and hybridizer, he will also bring divisions of many of his plants for sale. We look forward to Mark sharing the unique beauty and surprises of Catasetum at our March meeting.

“Fragrance & Form: How Brassavola nodosa Shaped Modern Hybrids"
Jason Mackey will be sharing his knowledge and passion with orchid enthusiasts of all levels. Jason's love of orchids began in childhood and ultimately turned into a career. He is now the owner of Barefoot Orchids, a local South Florida orchid nursery whose name honors both his Florida roots and the great-grandmother who inspired generations of orchid growers in his family. Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society meets at 7:30 pm, at Flamingo Gardens, Mary N. Porter Learning Center.

“Growing Vandas: Understanding Their Growth Habits"
Cheryl Erins, the current President of the American Orchid Society, is a long-time orchid grower, AOS-certified judge, and active leader in the Chicago Judging Center and Past President of the Mid-America Orchid Congress. A former president of the Batavia Orchid Society, she enjoys sharing her expertise with orchid groups nationwide. She has traveled to Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Malaysia, and Taiwan, in addition to many North American venues, all to learn more about orchids. She will be attending the World Orchid Conference in Dresden, Germany in 2026

“The Giant World of Miniature Orchid & Growing in Simple Setups"
"What used to be a 'hobby' slowly grew to a small business that is expanding. We found out there are hundreds of growers, like me, searching for these hard to find, unusual, uncommon and rare micro and miniature orchids. Doing what you love is the most rewarding thing in life!" Tomas' other hobby is photography. "With a growing miniature orchid collection, there were endless opportunities for taking the pictures of these amazing, sometimes microscopical blooms.
